Suggestion: Extra Pyrewood Flavor Elements

Post by Aeliren » Tue Jan 31, 2023 9:25 pm

So, one of my favorite places in WoW is Pyrewood Village. Something about the small town with a dark secret that is still trying to help Alliance travelers when they can struck a chord with me, and I like hanging out here when it's daytime and the town isn't hostile.

But I think it's still missing a little something. Nothing that would be game breaking, and Pyrewood is a lively town already, but I think there are a few extra elements that could really add some flavor to it:
  • Pyrewood Innkeeper: Not of the "I'd like to set my hearthstone here" variety, because as much as I think it would fit the "town with a dark secret" theme to have someone be mauled to death by worgen when hearthing there at night, I believe that discounting Alah'thalas, Southshore and Aerie Peak should be the furthest Alliance-only hearth points up north. However, I think that seeing how they have a fully-stocked tavern, an alcohol/food/drink vendor in the town would be nice and make sense. If used as an RP spot, it would be nice not having to go to Ambermill for drinks every time. Going by the naming convention for the other vendors in the town, they'd likely have a generic name like "Pyrewood Innkeeper" or "Pyrewood Tavernkeep". They would count for Horde quests.
  • Pyrewood Sentry Captain: The person in charge of the town guard. A rare mob, mostly there for added flavor. Can be killed by Horde as the Pyrewood Sentry Captain, and by both factions as the Moonrage Sentry Captain, and counts for Horde quests.
  • NPC Variety: Pyrewood is populated only by men, except for the leatherworker. I think female variants of the Sentry, Elder and Watcher should be added to the human models, give the town a wider variety of inhabitants. They'd have the same gear and equipment, so it would just add a potential spawn model for daytime. This should not affect any of the unique NPCs (Armorer, Tailor, Leatherworker, Innkeeper, Sentry Captain).
  • Pyrewood Citizens: As with Hillsbrad Fields, Pyrewood is a (mostly) Alliance-aligned town that is the target of Horde adventurers. Unlike Hilslbrad Fields, it seems as if Pyrewood is solely inhabited by militiamen and elderly people. A generic "Pyrewood Citizen" or "Pyrewood Peasant" NPC should be enough to breathe a bit of civilian life into the town. They would of course have a worgen equivalent and be considered valid targets for the same quests as the Watchers, Sentries and Elders.
Edit: February 2nd additions:
  • River Arevass: This would require a bit of extra terraforming, but in Warcraft III there was a river that ran past Pyrewood Village with a bridge, where Tyrande fell in after helping Kael'thas escort a caravan. It would be nice to re-incorporate the river in-game, if possible.
  • Mailbox: Just outside the inn, it's the last stop for Alliance mail before going past the Greymane Wall. It's a bit dilapidated due to lack of use after the fall of Lordaeron, but still works.
  • Pyrewood Stable Master: The Pyrewood stables has a generic NPC patrolling it, but little more. This gives the stables a specific tender, who functions like any other stable master in the game. As with all currently existing and suggested NPCs, has a worgen counterpart and counts for Horde quests.
  • Governmental Representative: For obvious reasons, the Lord Mayor and the Pyrewood Councilmen can't really be interacted with by players due to being targets of assassination for Horde. But a lower-ranked town clerk or Deputy Mayor could be added to give the local government a "permanent" presence due to the Pyrewood Council only ever spawning for the assassination quest, as well as potentially being an Alliance quest giver for Gilneas-related quests.

Honestly +1. Always felt there needed to be more going on with this town, although I suspect Gilneas will make it more relevant for quests and such.

I imagine Pyrewood will be more fleshed out with the Gilneas release; at least it makes sense to me for it to be that way.

But yeah, +1.

Can't think of any reasons not to. It would make the town feel more alive.

I'm glad people like the ideas so far!

Thanks to Zaas and Bayanni reminding me that Gilneas is coming next patch, I had a few extra ideas that could be fruitful given Pyrewod's status as a border town with Gilneas:
These ones are a little bit more gameplay-involved, but aside from the re-addition of River Arevass they're also made with the intention of making daytime Pyrewood the last stop for Alliance before going into Gilneas.

As a proof of concept, I came up with these visual aids to give a more concrete idea of what Pyrewood would look like with most of my suggested additions. Unfortunately, I do not have the means to show what the River Arevass could look like if added in-game so I left that one out.

These images were made with the use of the WoW RP private server Epsilon, which allows for custom NPC and crafting builds that allowed me to create these. I think they speak for themselves as to the flavor they add to this small town if implemented.

Pyrewood Guardhouse
The idea is to convert the two-story building up the hill into a guardhouse, adding amenities such as weapon racks (as seen on the Sentry Captain image), barracks space, and turn the top room into either a rudimentary cell or more barracks room for the sentries and watchers.

Maybe the Food/Drink vendor should just be a regular non elite and not count towards Horde quests, because another elite mob in the inn would be kind of mean, as horde players have to come there for a quest.

Make me sincerely interested in that server. I will join them for some fun play and hope Turtle won't mind them :P
