Tips for a new warrior player

Post by Theshadow862 » Fri Nov 04, 2022 6:44 pm

Hi folks,

I was wondering if I could get some tips and/or advice for a warrior class. I haven't tried it since i was told that the leveling experience isn't great, but I love melee classes and really want to give it a shot. Thanks! :)

1. Learn to tank and do it from early dungeons. It is interesting and will guarantee you fast queue to dungeons and good gear.
2. Get parry, tactical mastery and anger management in any leveling spec.
3. If you go two handed weapon, use hamstring and play with distance. Come close to enemy only when your attack timer is ready. After hit, increase your distance so the faster attacking enemy could not do more hits while you waiting your next attack.

Nerf high level enchants on low level gear
Add lvl requirement to bandages
Best and optimal gear for 10-19 twinks
Have fun not only at 60.

I would advise trying DW as it can be quite fun and rewarding if you don't like waiting 3.0 seconds for attacks. I leveled DW from 20-50 and had a good time with it. People normally give up because they get a string of misses on a mob but most of the time it felt like I had faster kills and I definitely had more rage to spend.

Noted. Not my thread, but similar enough. happy_turtle_head

What do warrior specs tend to look like? I was think of Arms first, deep prot as my second once unlocked. I've put my first points into deflection, rushing to anger management.

For tank.
Focus on new buttons. Fill other talents to get access to new buttons.
Start with https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1 (parry, anger management)
Then pick Anticipation https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-5
Then pick 3 points of Shield Specialisation https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-N
Then pick Last stand https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-NC1
Then pick Improved Shield Block https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZC16
Then 1 point of Toughness https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZD16
Then Improved Sunder armor https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZD163 it is not new button, but it is great improvement of your main button
If you are new tank, then I'd pick improved Taunt https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZD1632
Then Concussion Blow https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZD16321
Then Improved Shield Bash https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZD16321C (You get a lot of interruptable casters in 5 mans)
Then 2 points of Toughness https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZF16321C
Then one-handed weapon spec https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZF16321H
Then Improved Shield Slam https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZF16321H6
Then Defiance https://talents.turtle-wow.org/warrior/50U1-0-ZF16X21H6 Because you'll need that threat when you start doing dungeons with ppl in raid gear. Before 50 lvl you will have better gear than all your potential party mates.

If you learn to pull with charge, then improve it.

When you will get enough practice, you can remove Improved Taunt.
For raids you don't need improved Shield Bash. There is nothing to interrupt there. Go improved Shield wall instead.
For raids you can remove Anger management and pick something else.

Here's a few tips from what I have experienced so far. It is not the perfect technique, but it has served me well thus-far. Any constructive criticism is welcome!

The leveling talent spec i have enjoyed using so far includes arms/fury at the start with points spent in pro later in the game. I take improved heroic strike 3/3 and 2/5 Deflection then i move into improved charge 2/2 and 3/5 tactical mastery this allows me to stance dance as needed when I have lower rage and not be penalized too heavily. This comes in handy if im tanking WC/SFK. I then take improved overpower 2/2 and work my way into fury for a few levels. I take cruelty 5/5 and unbridled wrath 4/5 and the rest of my spec is prot to better help with mid-range to late game 5mans. I take advantage of overpower as much as possible. It is rage efficient and is a good dps source when soloing mobs that are higher level.

At 60 I respec to get the most passive rage generation and rage cost reduction as possible. At 60 i prefer ARMS 11(pick up anger management) FURY 9(4/5 unbridled wrath) PROT 31.

For leveling i mostly prefer to tank dungeons as there seems to be a shortage of tanks on the server. I often will queue and get a group within 5-10 minutes. I have found that queuing for a group is easier if you friend all your healers from prior groups and stay in a large guild like "Newcomers" so you can find DPS classes more easily.

I have a few tips on tanking that I have found quite effective as well, if you are an Orc DO NOT USE THE RACIAL AS IT WILL REDUCE THE HEALING ON YOU BY 50%. Your healer will run OOM very quickly and your party will run the risk of wiping that much more easily.

Watch your party's mana before pulling mobs, I will usually feel comfortable pulling if everyone is 50% or more mana.

I also set my keybinds in the interface panel so i can easily set marks like skull, X, square, and moon. I recommend creating a macro that notifies the party of the kill order and CC responsibilities for said marks. It's a pain to type every time.

I make macros to chain my abilities together as much as possible. See below for examples:

Opener Macro for first mob in group pull.
/cast Charge
/cast Mocking Blow
/cast Heroic Strike

I then switch to Defensive Stance for the rest of the engagement.

Second Macro on another button used for reducing damage and increasing threat at a reasonable rage cost of 15 rage. (late game talents allow for total cost of 13rage). It reduces damage taken (makes it easier on the healer) and generates rage and threat.

/run if not UnitIsUnit('player', 'targettarget') then CastSpellByName('Taunt'); end
/cast Shield Block

This will allow you to proc Revenge on CD and allow you to taunt the enemy mob off a party member as needed.

For the rest of the engagement I tab between the mobs and use Revenge as much as possible while using Shield Block on CD. Early in the encounter is it recommended to use Demoralizing Shout to reduce damage taken and to generate threat on enemies that have not been struck by spells or melee. Thunderclap should be used at least once per engagement to reduce damage taken and generate threat on multiple enemies at once.

So in summation, charge the first mob and hit w/ mocking blow/herioc strike, change stance to defensive, tab over to 2nd mob while using 2nd macro to start shield block with optional taunt and use revenge on the 2nd mob. 3rd mob should be hit w/ a taunt as needed or a heroic strike. Then Demoralizing shout to reduce dmg and then Thunderclap to reduce damage further. All of this is done while auto attacking and rotating back to the first mob (skull) then 2nd (X) then 3rd (square) and so on.

If the mob I am engaged with is a caster I make sure to shield bash when they are casting as close to the end of the cast as possible. It wastes the mob's time while other party members are attacking it. If it attempts to heal itself I shield bash it AS FAST AS POSSIBLE.

For line of sight pulls or ranged pulls I will use the following macro:

/cast Bloodrage
/yell I AM RANGE PULLING PLEASE GIVE THE TANK TIME TO GATHER AGRO!
/cast Shoot

I think this should be a good reference to get you started. I hope things work out well for you! Good Luck

If you decide to try tanking, there's some very helpful pointers in this thread including a full chart of your threat spells:

If you are short on gold, you can learn only first rank of following skills:
Hamstring
Overpower
Thunderclap
Mocking blow
Intercept
Shield Bash
Pummel

Additional ranks add more damage, but don't increase utility of those skills

Only learning rank 1 is a good tipp, but caution when only learning rank 1 thunderclap for tanking. The reason why its so good for tanking is because it has a threat multiplier on ita damage. You hinder your tanking quite a bit by not getting higher ranks. So if you want to tank while lvling, try to not skimp on tclap ranks. Makes dungeons much less stressful

Some dudes say that you can charge in and literally spam tclap in dungeons for tanking.

Did they overstate? Or is this an vailable option?

Viable, however, not optimal.

Hi there.

Welcome aboard, fellow warrior. My advice would be pretty simple: once you memorize your skills and class abilities you'll have no problems figuring out which talents and what gear will be most useful and your game will be most fulfilling.
Levelling as a warrior might look tedious or sometimes slow, however, that solely depends on your goals. Warriors can be fast levellers, alas, this won't be any fun or efficient for groups. Take your own pace. satisfied_turtle
