Recent server lagging

Some months ago I played with my friends I think when there used to be 400-1000 people online on average, the server didn't lag too much, but now I see 2000+ people online and there is so much lag seemingly all the time, I am not sure where these people came from or if they'll stick around but is there any plans for a server upgrade or something? I have donated a bit cause I've played 1k+ hours at this point, I really like the server but it's annoying with the lag recently
