[Release] Alt HD - Update #2

Post by Vidooo » Tue Oct 10, 2023 7:39 pm

Hi there.

Image
Turtle HD used for character model

This is a personal project I have been working on and will continue to update as time goes on. Frill doodads (the grass and such) are overlooked in HD packs no matter which expansion you look at. Vanilla, WotLK, etc. They always seem fully unchanged. However, I personally feel as though changing these makes the biggest impact in making the game truly feel more HD-ified. Although, it does change the look and feel of some zones drastically so you have been warned if that isn't your thing. Screenshots of some changed zones and download link at the bottom of the post.

Eastern Kingdoms has, as of October, seen changes in every single zone. It is still a WIP however, as seeing changes doesn't mean finished. As for Kalimdor...

Changed zones in Kalimdor:

Teldrassil
Darkshore
Ashenvale
Durotar
Barrens
Stonetalon
Mulgore
Desolace
Feralas
Tanaris
Thousand Needles
Azshara

Most zones on this list and every zone unmentioned are still fully WIP. This is more of an early release as people were asking. It's, of course, 100% playable and is 100% compatible with the HD mod but alternatively can be played standalone too as per the screenshots not using it. People have asked for a release somewhat often so I figured I may as well oblige. This mod will be updated periodically, take this post as a playable concept. I would appreciate constructive feedback and bug reports very much. Even when I am done with all frill doodads I have plans to replace bushes and hopefully trees too (some of which are already in the current downloadable project) so stay tuned.

Q&A

What's the difference between this mod and Turtle HD?
- This mod will have a greater emphasis on the frill doodads, trees and bushes of Azeroth. This mod will aim to only touch environments

Is this compatible with xyz mod?
- Should be fully compatible with other custom patches as this mod does not touch any DBC file. However, the addon ImpulseBooster causes issues with loading textures so it is advised to NOT use it with this mod.

Help I've encountered something that looks strange what do I do?
- Let me know about it and I'll try to get onto fixing it asap, in the meantime reinstalling the mod can help sometimes too. If textures are white, restart your game and turn off ImpulseBooster if it's enabled.

Any known bugs?
- Typing /console gxrestart messes up some textures. Restarting your game fixes this, unsure on how to fix this right now

Any recommended mods to go with this one?
- Patch-B from Turtle HD adds an abundance of building and doodad textures that go very well with this mod (Patch A not required) viewtopic.php?f=29&t=2827
- The water mod softens vanilla's water textures making them go better with the more muted and softer textures of Alt HD viewtopic.php?t=8786
It's all up to preference! But at the very least these two really help pull the aesthetic together.

P.S looks best with vanillatweaks' frill density option set to 256 alongside and plays the smoothest with Vanillafixes. performance shouldn't be taking too large of a hit with that

Tryed it and Elwyn/Redridge looks so much better. I wouldn't had expected this upgrade from "such little" changes.

Thanks for sharing it!

Hey, I was wondering, what is "dxvk"
I get how to custom the vanilla tweak tool (frill density option set to 256) but I don't get the "alongside playing best when running off of dxvk" (it is mentioned in your PS at the end of the post)
thank you for the answer, and I can't wait to try your mod and make some sceen shots of it :-)

Hey dxvk comes with vanillafixes, it boosts performance to retail levels i hear (which is pretty handy as vanilla's performance can drop on 256 frilldensity)

Hope you enjoy the mod!

Thank you all, I can definitely make a changelog though it'd probably be along the lines of the list in the original post. There'll be way too many assets for me to list on their own at least imo. Anyway, I have replaced the trees in Westfall. Combined with the HD mod, it gets a result like this.

Image

I was curious as to whether people would like future tree changes to be in a separate patch or in the current one?

Hey all, the addon ImpulseBooster appears to break some textures. Just a warning, if you see any blocky white textures and have that addon enabled, try disabling it and restarting your game, it may fix the error!

Stormwind has a tree that pushes out of it's square along the water between Trade District and Old Town.

Another issue I'm seeing is in Redridge Mountains. The trees seem to be bigger than their prior states. This results in a lot of mobs spawning/walking inside the trees without us being able to see them. Noticed this to the south of Lake Everstill where some of the murlocs were.

I have reverted a few tree changes until I can figure out how to fully get them working. 1.12 modding is very sparse and barren and without proper tools it can be rather challenging at times for certain things. Please always note that white textures are typically resolved by restarting your game or disabling certain addons. Besides that though, every vanilla zone in Eastern Kingdoms has now seen some form of change, what's your favorite? Mine has to be The Hinterlands! Or maybe the new Stranglethorn?

Is it possible to use that mods with patch-B.MPQ (Environment HD Retexture) from Turtle HD Project ?
I don't like new characters model animations and use only patch-B.

How does your character look like that in the first picture HD patch how no face that looks that good. Like the eyeliner alone looks custom. Hair color looks custom too

Love the mod! However the Heartswood lvl 20 Warlock quest cannot be completed without disabling this first.

There is a tree at 31,31 in NW Asheville that you have to be in melee range and click with cog wheel. With this mod enabled, the cog wheel is always grey and I tried for hours different angles before realizing to try to disable this!

More info on what the tree looks like:

My game became sometimes crash with using Update 2 of that mod but never crashed before with Update 1. Works stable without Alt HD mod.
Can you post a link to Update 1 if it still available?
From mods I am using Patch-B from Turtle HD + Pretty Night Sky. Game patched by VanillaTweaks and Vanillafixes.
ImpulseBooster was removed. If this can help, I can send crash log.

How I combine it with the patch B of the Project HD?
When I try it the trees and some textures don't change. What's the order? For example, I like the textures that you put for the Stormwind Keep outside but when I use the Patch B they're replaced for the Patch B textures.
