Dishonorable Ranks

Post by Pompa » Thu Jan 10, 2019 11:39 pm

Note: Remember that this mechanic is not custom, We have been doing a lot of research to bring back to life discarded / unused mechanics from early days of the game.

Sands of Time #03

In one of my many travels, I noticed that we weren't punishing our players for committing dishonorable kills. This will change now, we have decided to visually punish them!

Dishonorable Ranks

For killing low level players or civilians, players will now be ranked negatively (this is only visual, apart from the fact that you'll need to earn a lot of honor again if you want to recover). We have added these dishonorable ranks:
  • Dishonored
  • Exiled
  • Outlaw
  • Pariah
Have fun and be evil!

Ranks aren't affecting anything game-wise?

Pure "cosmetic" and server reputation meaning only... I guess (which is the best imo)

I think it's Pariah that makes your factions stop trading with you.

Should be like it. At least that's what there used to be for neutral based factions, unless you commit unhonorable deed toward them explicitly.

It's currently not the case on Turtle WoW.

If you lower your honor rank to Pariah, nothing will change, apart if having a long way back if you ever decide to get back to positive ranking. If you lower reputation rank with any faction where it's possible, then yes, nobody will trade you anything and at some point will try on killing you.

It's mostly visual, to show off how badasshole you are :)

Perhaps it's my memory making tricks on me, but I recall I've read that on manual with the very first set of 4CD of WoW back in March 2005.

Dishonor Points

Even among enemies as bitter as the Horde and the Alliance, there is honor. If you flaunt this honor and engage in objectionable PvP play, such as killing new players vastly inferior to you in level, or killing essential non-combat NPCs such as flight masters or quest givers, you will earn dishonor. If you accumulate enough dishonor through your criminal actions, you will be branded an outlaw. As a consequence, you'll suffer experience penalties, lose access to your own faction cities, and become so hated even by your own kind that every faction NPC will attack you on sight.

What are the rules for "negative" ranks?
NOTE!!! My question here asumes you don't do any "honored" kills at all:

I notice that if you kill one civilian you become Dishonored, and seem to stay that way for ever. I haven't notice you get rid of Dishonored "over time" (see below).

If you kill enough civilians, you become Outlaw, BUT seems you over time loose this status, eg. you get "honored" points from somewhere!

Why can we be allowed to stay Outlawed without regulary killing more civilians? It's not fun being Outlaw, and then notice that next time you logon you are only Exiled. :( What a dishonor for a proud Outlaw!

From a pure rp perspective, keeping the title Outlaw is important! No automatic over time honored points, please!

I'd say that staying on positive ranks should require you do honourable kills and so on, but for staying in negative ones ... Should be like in a RL you do something good all the time, you get a slight promotion, alas, do something bad and everyone will remember that through years.

Which means that once you have killed enough civilians up to the rank Pariah no faction related to you ever forgive you unless you do something good to make amends.

Seems like Pariah should be driven off by your faction unless you uprank to at least Outlaw or something like that.

"Outlaw" means a person that has lost it's membership of the society and is free to kill for anyone. You never loose/lost that "status". This at least in the good old days before criminals were served on gold plates, and were forgiven after 10 days in a not-so-dark-place. Many times an outlawed person was also expelled from the area. There are many examples of this from history, a very well known example are the vikings expelled to Iceland. And then again to Greenland. In both cases after commiting murder.

Don't think like nowdays. Nowdays are way too "soft", and we need to go back to the old ways with order and consequences.

Some gameplay effects would be most interesting! Imagine having to hunt down an outlaw from your own faction because they're terrorizing your own citizens.

Now I really would like to know how dishonored ranks works:

Killing ONE civilian gives "Dishonored". Then getting FIVE honored kills, does not remove that (take you back to rank 0). Nor does Dishonored go away over time.

STAFF??!

Going dishonorable is instant; gaining honor, not. You'll need to wait for the weekly honor maintenance.

It is available when you either type /pvp on or enter the Gurubashi Arena where you'll be Free For All PvP unless grouped.

You still don't seem to get rid of the title "Dishonored"! Or then the amont of honored kills that balance out ONE dishonored kill is huge (how many is required?). It's very easy to get dishonored from one civilian kill without it being your fault: if someone in a group with you kills a civilian, BANG!, you are dishonored. And from my tests done, does 5 honored kills not remove this title. Not after a week, not after two, not after three ...

Could you look into this, and fix it or something. This is ment to be an RP server, and "Dishonored" might not be very nice title to have for RP reasons. I have some characters who shouldn't be Dishonored, and now it seems impossible to get rid of that title - from that one civilian kill. :(

That's how the system was meant to work, you need at least 25 Honorable Kills in order to rank up that week. But actually I'm thinking that we could implement some repeatable quests to gain honor until you stop being Dishonorable... Like giving bandages to heal the injured or something like that!

Thanks for the number "25" :) I asume that's per dishonored kill, so 2 dishonored kills needs 50 honored kills then!?

A quest like "Use X Bandages" is a great idea. Something else that those 25 battleground (practically) kills for every "by mistake" civilian kills. Can be a big number for some.
