We Wish You an Unreal New Year!

Post by Torta » Mon Dec 30, 2024 10:01 pm

We here at the Turtle WoW Team would like to raise a pint and share a cheer as we welcome the new year!

Over the past year, we've reached incredible milestones — announcing ambitious projects like the Turtle WoW 2.0 Unreal Engine 5 client and releasing the Tower of Karazhan, the largest patch in Vanilla+ history. There's much more to come in the next year — we have no plans of slowing down!

Thank you for sharing our passion for the game and supporting us on this journey. There's nothing more rewarding than logging into the realm and seeing so many of you adventuring with the same unending enthusiasm as when the game first launched 20 years ago.

Tonight we're sharing a few updates on the ongoing Unreal Azeroth team's development of the new client:

General / Legacy Mode:
  • The graphics engine for Legacy mode is complete, aside from weather effects and a few minor elements.
  • Smoother performance: textures, models, and visual assets are now loaded asynchronously, using only the resources required for the current mode.
  • The new animation engine now supports all visual effects, including bones, lights, particles, and textures.
  • The FrameXML widget API is fully implemented for scripting and customization.
  • Spell and item tooltips are fully implemented.
  • Pet systems are now functional.
  • The taxi system is now functional.
  • World map, minimap, and 3D objects in the UI are all working.
  • The talent UI is fully functional.
  • Death effects, corpses, and related features are ready.
  • Sky, moon movements, and cloud generation are working as intended.
  • Lots of small things that make the game playable: flying splines, quest log, etc.

Yesterday, we finally logged into Nordanaar and witnessed all of you playing the game from the original clients on the same serve:

Modern Mode:
  • Weather effects are now fully supported.
  • Sky, moon movements, and cloud generation are working as intended.
  • Blizzard light sources are now adapted for Modern mode, with plans to completely remake all WMO lights.
  • Modern mode now features its own independent light cycles, separate from Legacy.

The world's first player to experience Unreal Engine WoW in Modern Mode on a live server!

Legacy / Modern Switch:
  • We can now fully confirm it will be possible to seamlessly switch between modes in-game, with fully separate shaders, shading paths, and resources for each.

Here's to another year of discovering the Mysteries of Azeroth! 🥂

I think the bloom is a bit strong but it looks nice otherwise. Colors also aren't quite right to me, but I am sure it will improve massively.

The correct link for the unviewable in-snow pictures is

I just counted up the picture numbers in the URL and noticed number 2 was missing. happy_turtle

I think this looks great, I am very excited, however, I would just ask please please please, PLEASE, get rid of the "God Rays" and the persistent fog that has plagued WoW, since it's release. This "fog" that exists in every zone for no apparent reason, regardless of the time of day. This will make the game look much more crisp and clean. I love the "darker nights" that I see in the video. Might I suggest adding a "Firefly" pet as a low level quest reward that can fly near you to illuminate the immediate surrounding area near the player, and maybe add an effect to Fire, Lightning, and Holy/Light spells that can also illuminate areas, like Consecration, and Lightning Bolt/Chain Lightning. This would be SOOO EPIC. Very excited for the future of Turtle WoW!

Sometimes fog is a must. It's immersion breaking to see whole Westfall from Stormwind Harbor, volcanic Blackrock Mountain from Elwynn Forest or even giantic tree of the Twilight Grove from every human zone. You think you do but you don't.

this is one of those "you think you do but you don't" moments

Without the fog it would look really really ugly, you can see the other zones without the fog

Wondering if the light output will get toned down? Right now every lantern/torch looks like a mini sun emitting blinding amounts of lights, and I assume they're all flame based, so shouldn't they be flickering as well?

I was wondering if the damage system (floating text combat) will be updated? it is important to clarify that (at least me) we don't want it to change to version 3.3.5a but we don't want it to be pixelated. We love to see giant numbers on the screen when the critical is a big number, but the current client makes it look pixelated.
Happy new year!.

This looks frigging amazing! I'm so hyped for this client it's unreasonable. Any chance to beta test it? happy_turtle_head

Also I gotta ask, how easily would we be able to make mods for it? The current way with MPQs and blizzard's weird model and texture formats (M2, BLP, WMO etc) is incredibly complex and buggy, and I would love to make mods for it. Hope unreal handles models and textures a bit more intuitively.
Nydas - 60 High Elf Mage (Nordanaar)
Farren - 60 Tauren Shaman (Nordanaar)
Gothric - 24 Human Paladin (Nordanaar)
Corel - 30 Night Elf Druid (Nordanaar)
Markal - 58 Undead Priest (Tel'Abim)

They are not redesigning the whole game just porting over the functionality of the game into unreal. I would be using all the WOW assets. So the Tauren cat would look the same with much better lighting and effects. In time if it is something they decided to change they could though.

UE5 client will get their own HD models as stated in the 2.0 announcement trailer, but who knows what that exactly means

Dun Morogh looks amazing! Wetlands too. But as it was already mention here. those spot lights are too strong and bright. Its like LED lamps at music festival stage :D.
It will look much better if those lights has lowered brightness.

I'm thrilled. I think that the whole unreal client affects mainly the nights in game and oh lord... That will be some awsome nights.

It should run, but unfortunately not with the HD graphics, only legacy SD.
