[Release] Turtle Restoration Project - upscaled World Maps & more

Post by HerTiSo » Tue Nov 05, 2024 4:42 pm

Welcome to the Turtle Restoration Project (TRP)

"Ye think ye know the lands o' Azeroth, do ye? There's much yet to discover, if yer willing to seek it."
– Brann Bronzebeard
The Turtle Restoration Project (TRP) enhances the world maps and loading screens of World of Warcraft’s classic era (version 1.12.1) through machine learning upscaling, tailored specifically for Turtle WoW. Created to complement the server’s fan-made expansion, Mysteries of Azeroth, TRP aligns with the server’s mission to deepen players’ connection to the Vanilla WoW world, capturing Azeroth’s timeless sense of adventure.

Image

At higher resolutions, the original Vanilla maps and loading screens appear blurry and lack detail. TRP addresses this by doubling the in-game resolution of map and loading screen files, while effectively increasing visual detail up to four times. The result is a sharper, more immersive experience that enhances exploration and transitions, while preserving Azeroth’s iconic charm.

Image

Note: While TRP aims for high-resolution quality, the limitations of the old WoW engine require careful adjustments to avoid crashes or instability. As a result, the final quality may not fully match the resolution of current retail WoW assets but should come impressively close.

TRP is built in a modular way, following a three-phase approach for each map:
  1. Upscaling and Fixing Major Errors:
Initial upscaling of the map and addressing any prominent errors that may arise.
  2. Refining Labels:
Adjusting and improving labels, such as city names and region titles, to ensure clarity and alignment.
  3. Enhancing Visual Details:
Adding final touches to enhance other design elements for a polished, immersive look.
Starting with the major cities, each map requires considerable time and effort as I carefully work through these stages. In the future, TRP may additionally expand to other private servers under the name Azeroth Restoration Project, bringing the same visual upgrades to the broader WoW classic community.

Project Progress

Below is an overview of the current progress on TRP. Each zone goes through three stages: Upscaling, Relabeling, and Enhancement. The checkmark indicates completion of that stage for each zone.

Yo this is cool, thanks! Can't wait for the loading screens. Can we also get those in 3840x1600 ultrawide? Not sure if technically possible but would be super nice.

I’ve tried to do this before (replacing .blp) and it never worked. I have no issues replacing sounds/music, but the maps don’t seem to work when I do it.

I’ve switched the names of the Kalimdor and Azeroth .blp and it didn’t change in game. I’m 99% the path I did was correct.

Do you know of any reason why it wouldn’t work for me?

Unfortunately, that's not possible because of the limitations of the old engine. neutral_turtle_head

The first step is to enhance the existing loading screens. I'm planning to try adding 16:9 versions next, but unfortunately, the initial tests didn't go as well as hoped since the engine uses fixed aspect ratios for many elements.

There shouldn't be any performance degradation unless you're not using a 4GB-aware client. smiling_turtle_head

Yeah, funny enough, it was the 4:3 loading screens that initially got me interested in this whole thing. But I think if I ever manage to get widescreen loading screens working, they’d probably end up as a dedicated mod.

As far as I know, all visual assets are handled by the 1.12.1 client in a similar way. While digging for the map tiles, I also came across some stuff that could be minimap-related. There's a high chance that I'll be able to upscale/manipulate it as well.

I was thinking in the maps that you're upscaling, not the minimap, even Turtle has problems with the minimap hahaha, I guess that will be improved with the Unreal Client, they're not a priority, but I'm trying to do by myself a big map for show the status of the Azeroth of Turtle, similar to the map displayed in Old.wow.tools.
I mean the enhances that you refer in the main post as a future step in the modding.

I found a bug I guess, when looking the minimap of Alah'thalas, the border dissapeared when I make the map a window. I will try to put a screenshot.

I'm amazed with the upscale of the maps, they look good.

Oh right, sorry - so you mean at a later stage of the project? There are visual details scattered around the maps, like ships, dragons, and such stuff - which I'd like to improve or even redraw at some point.

I'm really interested in hearing what everyone thinks are the biggest issues with the current version. Personally, I find the warped or glitchy text labels to be the most pressing ones, but I'm planning to address this in phase two.

The only thing I've noticed is this:
There are seams where the different subzones meet. See this screenshot:
Image
I'm not sure if the cause is that I've set some transparency on undiscovered areas, however this is not an issue with the vanilla maps. This issue might need to be addressed before upscaling the majority of zone maps that have subzones, to avoid unnecessary reworks later.

EDIT: And another less noticable issue:
There are sharp seams where the texture tiles meet. Most noticable on the lower part of "Valley of Wisdom" text, and only when zooming in with Magnify and panning around:
Image
(right-click, then open image in new tab to see clearly)

Honestly, everything else is perfect. Even the warped text is not that much of an issue, as long as it's readable. It might be overly sharp in places, but that's fine.
