What are some good professions for a mage?
To get into the goblin spirit, I started off by doing Herbalism+Mining, assuming I'd make huge profits at the AH...
Sadly, while copper ore has been selling really well and herbalism still gave me a slight profit, levelling both of them is starting to be a massive chore because even though picked/mined everything in sight, i'm now level 20 and the new areas require I go back and grind the lower level materials for gods know how many hours.
So, I was going to replace one or both of these professions with something easier to level. I'm considering tailoring, since I hoarded all the Linen I got "just in case", but I don't know how useful it would be.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
Professions aren't going to make you a lot in terms of profit in early game, BUT.
You should definitely stick with both those professions though. Black lotus sells for big money and I'm sure there's some other herbs that make decent money. Mining has arcane crystals from thorium veins but I'm not sure what those'll get you. If you're willing to drop mining you can make money and also provide you and your homies with consumes using alchemy, the issue being of course herb would make less money. Not sure. Cooking is also just easy and overall worth it for sure, money aside.

If mining is tough to level from tin to iron, then acquire yourself glove enchant and mining pick enchant from ratchet (twow addition). You can also visit lake in Ashenvale. You can find silver pretty often there.
Other professions are not easier to level. In any case you would be stuck in low level locations for long time because you'll need tons of materials to level new one.
Mining+herbalism is best bet in terms of money. All other professions are only expenses.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
I would drop mining for skinning or alchemy. Skinning is very easy to level and make some gold off of it while leveling. Alchemy would be better at 60 and not too difficult to lvl. Engineering is best prof for every class if you are trying to min/max your character but its a gold sink to level up and you wont make any gold from it.

You need Traaz Ironfinger in Rachet. You need at least friendly reputation with Ratchet (neutral don't offer, I checked on Honored).Alexamenos wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 7:55 pm Where can I get this pickaxe enchant? I feel I've spoken to every NPC in ratchet with no success.

If you're playing a mage, a profession combo you'll always get a lot of mileage out of is Tailoring and Enchanting. Tailoring as a mage compliments a lot of gear crafting, as well as if you really get into farming and don't mind mindlessly aoe grinding you have a stable supply of free cloth. Upon that you can then craft certain things and disenchant them to rake in good money on the AH if you know what to craft.

You don't get any profits off crafting profession during leveling. There are a lot of crafters out there. To level your skill you need to make huge amount of same items. Market just don't need these items in those quantities. Competition between crafters drop prices of those items to the ground. You get less money compared to selling raw materials directly.
Disenchanting items during leveling is worst advise ever. Noone needs low level enchanting materials. At best you just supply your own skill progression. But in fact you just lose gold (which you actually need for your first character). Sell all greens to vendor.
You PROBABLY can get some profit on high level when you grind reputation and get rare recipes. But until that happen - you get only losses.
Best way is to sell all raw materials on AH and buy only those things that you actually need.
Pick double gathering profession. Now it is probably skinning+mining.
Herbalism was nerfed by introducing lashers farm. Killing mobs yields more herbs than running around world zones.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
So much of this is laughably false. Tailoring first of all is best supplemented by mages given they tend to aoe grind undead and humanoid mobs, hmm, what do those drop again? Oh right, cloth. And disenchanting is pretty profitable as early as level 20. You forget to take in mind as tailoring, when you're getting your own cloth as a mage tends to do your profit margins are much higher, about your only investment is thread costs on most crafts.Xudo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2024 10:02 amWhile arguments look correct, whole statement is wrong.Poxfox wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 5:51 pm If you're playing a mage, a profession combo you'll always get a lot of mileage out of is Tailoring and Enchanting. Don't even get me started on exactly how much gold I've made on numerous servers leveling up just turning my mageweave into White Bandit Mask then vendoring it. Swimming in mageweave and that craft vendors for 43 silver for only requiring 5 mageweave cloth, bleach, and a thread. The cloth being the biggest cost if you're buying the cloth, but you're grinding. Really going to try and tell me you won't come across hundreds of the crap while leveling while having access to a very quick shuffle.
Not sure how you can be so confident in being this absurd but you do you.
Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
And you apparently never heard of cost of opportunity. How would your margin be higher if you use the cloth you find yourself when you could have sold the cloth at the same price you'd buy it in the ah? That's just plain nonsense.Poxfox wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 8:13 pm You forget to take in mind as tailoring, when you're getting your own cloth as a mage tends to do your profit margins are much higher, about your only investment is thread costs on most crafts.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
Because it isn't worth more selling the cloth typically unless you're catching prices at really bad hours. If you want to talk cost of opportunity, look more at the fact you can make cloth into more gold than you get selling it in most cases if you know what you're doing. Opportunity Cost is what you leave on the table without referencing the alternative methods. Selling the cloth is just admitting you're either too lazy, or uninformed of how to make more money with it and it disgusts me that you encourage other people to have your same level of negligence yet you deign to give advice.Hctwowfan wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 11:15 pmAnd you apparently never heard of cost of opportunity. Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
Mate, you're just wrong. If you can sell an item for some gold and use your own cloth, you only need to buy the thread to craft it. You could have sold the cloth instead so missing out on the ah vendor value of your cloth is your cost of opportunity. If you buy the cloth and craft the item, you'll come out at the exact same "profit margin". It doesn't matter if you use your own cloth or buy it in the ah. There is no benefit in using your own self found cloth over ah bought.
Crafted item sells for 5G, the cloth you need is 4G. You make 1G or profit if you craft and sell the item.
a) you already had the cloth so you're turning 4G worth of cloth into a 5G item. You gained 1G by crafting the item. The 4G worth of cloth is still an expense cause you didn't sell your cloth for 4G.
b) you don't have the cloth and buy it for 4G. You're turning 4G of raw cash into a 5G item. You gained 1G by crafting the item.
There is no economical benefit using your own cloth
That's not even entry level economics, that's just common sense.
The value of the cloth doesn't matter whatsoever. It will always have the same buy/sell value regardless if the cloth price is high or low. You buying the cloth needed at price x is the same expense as you not selling your own cloth at the same price x.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
I think that price of cloth does matter, because if it is lower than some threshold, then selling crafted items will yield you money.
1. Sell this cloth. According to https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... cloth-4338 price is around 4s51c-4s83c per item.
There is someone selling 20 stacks of it on AH with price of 96s76c per stack right now. You need minimal discount to make your cloth sold. Lets say 96s75c.
Selling 5 stacks of this cloth will yield you 4g84s75c
2. Craft White Bandit Mask https://database.turtle-wow.org/?item=10008
I doubt you get anything above Honored with capital on AoE farming character. So you don't get huge discount on materials. You need to buy:
1 Heavy Silken Thread 20s each. If you Honored with some capital, then it will cost you 18s
1 Bleach 25c each. on Honored 22c
You can craft 20 masks from 100 cloth. When you sell them you get 43s65c*20=8g73s
To buy ingredients you need (1800+22)*20=3g64s40c
If you substract materials from profits, you get 5g8s60c
It is 23s above selling cloth on AH directly by crafting 20 masks. It is 1 silver per mask.
If you get Revered(=complete almost every quest in every zone) with some capital, then your profit will be higher. Around 3 silver per unit.
Can't say that it is very profitable to be good source of money.
So if you invest in this profession
and doing AoE farming on humanoids
and get high reputation with some capital
and spend some time crafting
then tailoring is actually good sink of your excessive cloth.
I can gather single Wild Steelbloom by level 23 character, sell it and get around 70s of money from 1 item.
So it is not good profession for your main. It would be better to pick something else instead.
Ok if you have 100 mageweave cloth. You have optionsPoxfox wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2024 8:13 pmDon't even get me started on exactly how much gold I've made on numerous servers leveling up just turning my mageweave into White Bandit Mask then vendoring it. You don't need to level disenchanting on your main to DE items. Make lvl 5 alt and just send him items.
So it is not good profession for your main. It would be better to pick something else instead.

Re: What are some good professions for a mage?
Next good question is: what is best item to disenchant?
Illusion dust costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... dust-16204 around 4s14c per item
Dream dust costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... dust-11176 around 49s per item
Vision dust costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... dust-11137 around 7s per item
Soul dust costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... dust-11083 80c per item
Strange dust costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... dust-10940 around 1s89c per item
Oviously, best dust to pursue is Dream one. It is probably because of banana quests. Any other dust is not profitable.
What can be crafted from Mageweave to produce Dream dust?
Shadoweave Mask 2 bolts, 8 Shadow Silks, 2 Heavy Silken Thread
Bolt of Mageweave https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... weave-4339 around 23s11c per item
Shadow silk costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... silk-10285 around 10s30c per item
46s22c for bolts + 82s40c for web + 40s for silk=1g68s62c per item
Black Mageweave Headband or Black Mageweave Shoulders
3 bolts, 2 Heavy SIlken Thread
69s33c for bolts + 40s for silk = 1g09s33c per item
Black Mageweave Boots
2 Thick Leather, 3 Bolts, 2 Heavy Silken Thread
Thick leather costs https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... ather-4304 around 4s44c per item
Total: 8s88c for leather + 69s33c for bolts + 40s for silk = 1g18s21c per item
All other options require more cloth and additional complex materials.
When you disenchant those items, you get 1 or 2 Dream Dust with 75% chance.
It means that you get 49s with 37.5% chance and 98s with 37.5% chance.
Even best option is cheaper than cost of its resources. Though if you use your own mageweave, then you get some profit from DE-ing of Black Mageweave Headband or Shoulders.
While I am on this topic, what items from other professions can be DEd to Dream Dust?
From Leatherworking it is Nightscape Pants, Nightscape Boots
Nightscape Pants require 14 Thick Leather, 4 Heavy Silken Thread
62s16c for leather + 60s for silk = 1g22s16c per item
Nightscape Boots require 16 Thick Leather, 2 Heavy Silken Thread

Heavy Mithril Boots require 14 Mithril Bars, 4 Thick Leather
Cost of Mithril https://www.wowauctions.net/auctionHous ... l-bar-3860 around 12s31c
