Hunter-tamed Mobs keeping their names/skills

I've seen hunters with tamed creatures that were 'named' mobs. I have tried to tame a few as well, but the 'named' mob reverts back to it's base species type. (e.g. Scorpion, Bear, Raptor) Are they broken? Or just not 'named' until their level equals yours? Perhaps something else is the problem? Please advise.
