Paladin leveling spec in party

Post by Kasztan » Thu Mar 17, 2022 1:28 pm

Hello! this is my first post on this forum!
I live far away from my family, so I had the idea to play an MMO with my brother and my dad and after much research I settled on Vanilla WoW and specifically this server (cuz f* giving Blizzard any more money)
after some deliberation and helping them pick, we have settled on playing the holy trinity with my brother as a mage for DPS, my dad as a Druid for healing (and perhaps off tanking once he gets used to playing the game) and me as a main tank as paladin, with perhaps some healing in case my dad slips up.

My main question is, under this set up ( I dont plan to play this character without them backing me up) would it be better to level as a protection pally straight away for the taunt, or as ret for a bit more dps?
Im leaning towards prot but unless its not neccesary for the early levels/dungeons I could see myself taking Ret instead or even leveling a warrior instead, I jsut thought pally would be great because of party buffs

Let me know what you think! I'm very excited to begin

Go holy until consecration, then go prot until 3/3 shield specialisation, then go deeper into holy OR prot, as you prefer. You'll want a shield spike, for certain.

I levelled my paladin as I wrote above, but I went deeper into holy for healing, which is a godsend once you get Divine Favour.

The good thing about your particular setup is that if your dad decides he enjoys tanking more than healing, you two can swap roles with a mere respec.

Best of luck, I wholeheartedly support family gaming.

That's a really good point I hadn't considered, definitely will do Pally then!
and thank you for the general advice for the build! sounds like a good plan :)
And honestly, I can't wait to start, waiting for my brother to have less homework but I wish I had thought of this sooner, since Ive been 5 years away from home just visiting on holidays and this seems like an amazing way to keep in touch/create new memories together

Cheers!

oh but I just saw that consecration is no longer a talent, but will be available regardless of spec at lv 20? so perhaps going prot from the beginning might be worth it? what do you think?

The new talents haven't been implemented yet. So you will for now need to go holy for consecration. When the new talents drop, those that we can see on the official webpage. I would say go full proc with your group :) have fun and Hope I will run into ya guys

As noted above, I wouldn't wait for the talent changes to go live - they certainly will make my advice irrelevant when they do, but if/when that happens is anyone's guess.

Got it, I thought they were already implemented
we'll only play once or twice a week so it will be slooooow perhaps the changes will hit before I reach lv 20 haha
still seems like a good idea to lvl as holy to start for divine strength/intellect and if I do reach 20 before the changes I will be able to get Consecration
Thank you both for the advice! see you in game!

If you’re going to Pallytank, I can’t recommend Engineering rnough. Paladins are missing a few key features that every Tsnk should have; namely a taunt and a ranged ability to pull. Target dummies made with Engineering can at least keep mobs off your dad until you can reestablish aggro, and dynamite is a great tool for engaging monsters at range. You will also want to take Mining to provide you with the raw materials engineering needs.

If you want to hit up Geofram in game, I can grt you started on the right foot. Note that Pallies CAN’T tank until level 16 at the earliest. This is when you get Righteous Fury, which you need to keep the monsters attacking you, and not your dad or brother.

Pallytanking is easy to pick up, yet difficult to master. When you fo get there, however, it is one of the best feelings the game has to offer.
