Shaman Tank Ideas

Post by Zakton » Sun Jan 16, 2022 10:21 pm

If shaman tanks are to be a thing, their 3 main hurdles are:
  • No Taunt
    No gear itemization
    Mana management
A few Ideas:

1. Give shamans and paladins a dang taunt, idc how lol

2. Instead of adding a bunch of mail gear with tank stats, a deep enhancement talent that converts a percentage of int into def (50%?)

3. Toughness talent increased from 2/4/6/8/10 to 10/15/20/25/30% increased armor, and move down a few tiers in enhancment

4. % of mana on block added to shield specialization talent (like pallies get)

4. % of mana on block added to shield specialization talent (like pallies get)

Suggestions to fulfill those requirements:

Abilities:
Primordial Fury, increases threat generated by frost, fire, and nature spells by 60%. (shaman version of Righteous Fury)

Jeer: 10 second cooldown, 5% base mana cost, baseline level 12 shaman ability.
Taunts the target to attack the shaman and deals X nature damage if the target is not targeting the shaman. Has no effect for targets already attacking the shaman.

Talents:
Call of the Earth Warden: Grants the shaman additional armor equal to 17/35/50 of your intellect and defensive rating equal to 5/10/15% of your attack power, and an additional 2/4/6% chance to parry an attack. (with the upcoming change to shamans it looks like parry is baseline.)

Shield Specialization, modified: also regenerates mana equal to 1/2/3/4/5% of your total mana each time you block.

Herald of Thunder: Requires Stormstrike, 2 ranks (or 3 if needed)
Using Stormstrike while holding a shield grants you 3/6(or 2/4/6) charges of Lightning Shield (up to a maximum of 9 charges.) while your Lightning Shield ability is active. Additionally, While your Lightning Shield is active your block chance is increased by 20% and the damage from your Lightning Shield procs are also dealt to 2 nearby enemies.

You could also, potentially, use Stoneclaw totem to taunt? Its a level 8 spell and, with some adjustments, it could be used as an aoe taunt. It already aoe taunts by default, the Devs would have to somehow make this threat go to the player that placed it. There is a Sentry totem, it gives its aura only to the player that placed it. Maybe there is a way to copy that mechanic and make Stoneclaw totem give its taunting aura to the player that placed it?

Totem's effective duration could be reduced to 6 seconds with 10 sec. CD. Or something like that.

To compensate for the fact that its not going to do anything else you could add some kind of buff, like damage reduction for the full duration. This could be a replacement for Shield Block, or similar defensive abilities.

Earth Grasp ele. talent could be changed to increase threat from it, instead of boosting its HP(since its not gonna be in immediate danger).

On top of it - there is Fire Totems talent in ele. tree, that improved threat from magma totem. Those two totems combined could be enough?
English is not my first language, not even second or third. Brace yourselves. sad_turtle

Hello everyone. I've got some other version of shaman tank changes. This one is based mostly on idea of control/stun. Just 1 new talent, no new abilities, but many changes.
It will use debuff slot for a frostbrand/frost shock effect, but new versions of them, so it looks like more viable.

1. Abilities.
1.1. Earth shock. Remove "Causes high amount of threat" . Add "Stun rooted enemy for 3 sec." (duration discussable).
1.2 Frost shock. Change to "Instantly shocks the target with frost, causing x to y Frost damage and slowing movement and attack speed by 50%. Causes high amount of threat and makes a target attack you for 2 seconds. Lasts 8 sec.".
1.3 Rockbiter weapon. Remove "allowing melee attacks to cause additional threat when using that weapon".
1.4 Frostbrand weapon. Replace with "Imbue the Shaman's weapon with frost. Each hit has a chance of causing x additional Frost damage and slowing the target's movement and attack speed by 25% for 8 sec. Each attack cause additional threat when using that weapon. Lasts for 5 minutes."

2. Talents.
2.1 Shield specialization. Add "Gives a chance on block, dodge or parry to fully recharge all of your active lightning shields." (Some % for every tier). Recharge in this case means restore max of 3 charges. Recharge effect also recharge shields you cast with Thunderhead talent. If you have no lightning shields active casts it on you for free.
2.2 Anticipation. Change to "Increases your chance to dodge and parry by and additional 1/2/3/4/5%".
2.3 Elemental weapons. Change to "Increases the melee attack power bonus of your Rockbiter Weapon by x%, your Windfury Weapon effect by x% and increases the damage caused by your Flametongue Weapon by x%. Frost shock applied to a target affected by frostbrand weapon effect removes this effect, spreading it on 2 nearest enemies and freezes primary target in place for 5 sec.". (duration of root is also discussable).
2.4 New talent, row 6, 1 rank, "Taunting totem". "Changes stoneclaw totem to taunt enemies on shaman instead of itself. Reduces its cooldown to 15 sec."
2.5 Stormstrike. Instead of applying debuff on target it applies buff on shaman, empowering 2 next elemental attacks.
2.6 Toughness. Change to "Grants you additional armor equal to x/x/x/x/x of your intellect and attack power" (discussable).

What we have in result is a mail+shield tank based on movement control and stuns.

Pvp shamans are already nightmare to deal with as a warrior.

Increasing shaman tankinees by a ton will only make things worse.

I hope a solution can be found thought but the problem should be kept in mind
