Peacechief!

Lok’tar… ogar. Does yew even know da werd werdz, Son of Man? “Victory, or death!” Throm’ka. “To BATTLE!” Ize Gorfrunch Smashblade, a true zugger, a killer wivvout honor but plenty o glory. Ize writin dis nosh ter beg, ask, or command, but ter insult. Ize Blacktoof o da Spire n nosh see yewr campaigns unner da Backstabber and alongside da pale dogz, but recentlike Ize n some gits come n see yewr Backstabrimmar, yewr Orcs, yewr New Horde. N Ize say now, yew lost da way, O Peacechief, O Manson, O Slave.

Where da Clans? Why yew say all Orc one Orc, one Horde? Half Orc whelp in Backstabrimmar nosh even know what clan demz parents of. Say Orc of Durotar, Orc of Horde. Even Camp Orcs nosh have Clan no more. Why all yew got is Frostwolf n Warsong? Even demz tyrant Blackhand n da Backstabber unnerstand many Clan make Horde, had da strengf ter tolerate ovver Chief keep dem sharp. Yew afraid of Orc dat know war, make war on yew? Why yew chase out Twilight Hammer n Burning Blade? What skellingorc yew hide unner Grommash Hold, why all Warsong too afraid find new Chieftain? Does yew fink young Orc wivvout past is easier-like ter rule?

Where da aid fer ourz allies? Even now Amani still fight n die in norf forest. Ogre treat like brute as if weze nosh fight side n side against Gronn so long past-like. Weze bled tergevver many year, n now yew go court human queen, n Ize hear she nosh first. Maybe yew say all War mistake, Orc good demon bad, Human good, but dat nosh change fact weze bled n died fight many Human long time, n weze see Human idea o peace after last war over. If all dis war such misunnerstand, such demon fault, why da Camps, swo’bu, why da Camps? Elf still make war on Amani, Dwarf on Dragonmaw, even dig all Taurenland, n yew chew bone behind tall wall askin all ter play nicelike.

And what dese wall do fer Orc? Why yewr first act in new land is form Kingdom, build City? Whose werds dese? Whose ideas dese? Is yew Orc, or Human? A Chieftain, a Warchief rules by might and falls by blade when iz weakness seen. A King wear shiny hat n bury self behind big walls dat rot from wivvin, coin chewing path through heart n soul alike. Yewr Orgrimmar breed weak Orc, poor Orc, Orc wivvout Clan, a land o merchant n employee ‘stead o Grunt and Peon.

Ize tell yew likkel o da plan o Ize n Ize Warchief. Ize seen yew and da troof dat yew were raised by Human and learned rule at da feet o da Backstabber. Ize serve da son o’ da First Warchief, da Destroyer that first made Horde. Nosh be surprised when Orc learn yewr wickedness n lies n leave yewr City ter fight da War dat never ended. Nosh be surprised when blade finds yew. May yew die soon dat da shames yew still heap at our ancestors’ pyres cease. In da meantime, go hug some grass, yew peacemonger. Orcs iz fer WAR!

((Hello Turtle devs/community! I’m here speaking for <Blacktooth Grin>, an open world RP-WPVP guild that’s been zugging on various servers since 2006. We’re now looking for a home following a vote to boycott Blizz after the recent lawsuit, and while a few of us have been playing on Turtle, many have been disinterested on account of the lack of open world PVP. Whether or not we end up moving to Turtle, I’d like to share a bit about our history, what’s made RP-WPVP so engaging for us over the years, and some suggestions our members brainstormed for how Turtle might advance the cause of bringing Azeroth to life in a more warlike direction without forcing PVP on those not interested.

A brief overview of our history: we started on Scarlet Crusade, moved to Venture Co when RP-PVP servers first opened, and then played on Grobbulus during Classic. Our clan embodies the Dark Horde, bearing no loyalty to Thrall and continuing to fight the Second War. Our home base has traditionally been Stonard, from where we patrol our borders and launch raiding parties to torch Darkshire and towns beyond, our Reavers taking special delight in the slaughter of civilians and crippling the Alliance’s ability and will to wage war. On VeCo our rivals <Keepers of Stromgarde>, <Midnight Reveries>, and other guilds both attended scheduled battles with us and would respond in force when they saw /worlddefense light up; we maintain a strict set of rules of engagement to try to avoid defeats turning bitter. We ran a series of campaigns, chained storyline battles accompanied by forum RP threads where we set the scene for why these battles took place and our members & foes shared their characters’ experiences during the conflicts. On both VeCo and Grob we created coalition alliances with other Horde RP guilds involving IC and OOC agreements to support one another and further each other’s RP and PVP goals. On both servers, bored Alliance knew that a surefire way to find a fight was to kill a Stonard Grunt and wait for Grin hearthers to boil out of the inn.

Over the years, our members have found a home with us because of the joys and immersion RP-WPVP provides that can’t be found elsewhere. Whether we’re ambushing Alliance adventurers who trespass in our Swamp before settling down at the campfire or assisting our Dragonmaw allies by laying siege to Menethil Harbor, our activities make the World of Warcraft feel more real for our members and foes alike, the WPVP bringing the world to life the exact way a BG doesn’t. We essentially RP as NPCs and create IC problems for others to solve -- there’s a satisfaction to seeing Alliance questers who were not out for PVP have to band together to defeat our raiding parties, and we’ve been a villainous foil for Good-aligned Horde RPers to set themselves apart from. Combat using the WoW combat mechanics allows for engaging long term rivalries with our IC foes where otherwise Horde and Alliance RP guilds might have little interaction. RP-PVP means living in the world, not just leveling through it and moving on or living in an instance away from the rest of the community. RP-WPVP is a niche for players who love to zug and yet love to cultivate a positive server community, unlike your average WPVP griefer.

OK, on to our proposals for Turtle! We understand that Turtle is not a PVP server and that a majority of the current community do not actively seek out PVP. While our dream would be a PVP server with Turtle’s love for the lore and a living Azeroth, we still have some ideas for how voluntary PVP can be encouraged in ways that allow players to make Azeroth feel more immersive. This is a grab bag sorted by importance/ease, with the most doable and helpful changes near the top and most time-intensive & out there at the bottom.))
  • Make sure DHKs aren’t too punishing on the honor grind, but are more a visible badge of dishonor. Let war be a viable option for players who want to RP Azeroth’s many war criminals and evil characters.
Provide illusion rewards for achieving honor ranks or dishonor ranks. Provide entrylevel, subpar PVP gear rewards unlockable through dishonor ranks.
  • Make WPVP possible at all levels and encourage players to congregate for WPVP through WPVP “event” days that alter rules in certain zones, including level limits - players over the max level of the zone can’t flag there that day to ensure fair PVP. Provide PVP quests in the event zones to get kills on the other faction. This could involve complex zone objectives (suggested below separately as we came up with many) or be as simple as daily “kill 10 players in <zone>” quests.
  • Allow instant rez, skipping rez timer when resurrected by a player (if not already implemented). The rez timer is an important tool for encouraging PVPers to stay alive, but it’s important to be able to revive your teammates if you take the field or a truce is called.
  • Push up honor for world kills compared to BG kills but with rapidly decaying returns for repeat kills (resetting daily). It shouldn’t allow for honor grinding anywhere close to BG levels, but if world objectives or other opt-in WPVP mechanics are implemented, they should be valuable to fight over.
  • Incentivize flagging even when not actively PVPing (extra resource node drops, bonus xp, etc).
  • Allow interested players to RPPVP as Azeroth’s villains through a mercenary system for neutral factions mirroring the diplomat system that allows FFA flagging a la Gurubashi Arena by talking to a faction NPC. Become hostile to all flagged players except others in your group or dedicated to your subfaction; gain rep through PVP kills in certain areas relevant to those factions; be friendly to all that group’s NPCs; unlock PVP illusions for getting kills while representing a subfaction. Subfactions - defias brotherhood, blackrock orcs & dragonmaw, grimtotem, dark iron dwarves, venture co, shadow council / burning legion / burning blade, bloodsail and other extant factions (centaur tribes)
  • Allow guilds to pick zones for their home territory, give PVPers bonus honor for seeking out their rivals’ territory and killing that guild in that area & give that guild bonus honor for killing in defense of their zone too.
WPVP objectives in the model of EPL towers or BC objectives like Halaa, Hellfire towers, overview
  • Make sure only some are active at a time to concentrate players together. Group all zones into low/med/high (10-24, 25-39, 40+) brackets, and every day one zone of each bracket has their objectives active & advertised by ingame barkers in the zone and other inactive zones of the same tier, and in major faction hubs (org, sw)
  • All zones’ objective rewards increase over time for the losing side and decrease over time for the winning side to incentivize balanced participation. Rewards should include zonewide buffs for flagged players, bonus honor, and gold.
  • Produce spawnable NPC forces (like raiders or Lok/Ivar AV spawns) as a catchup mechanic to help if the other side has been dominating for too long.
  • Rewards for capturing are relevant to the players of level for those zones & cosmetic as well. Cosmetic awards should be tradeable (not soulbound) to encourage alt creation and involvement by endgame players in lower level WPVP.
  • Zone objectives include a mix of player kill objectives and NPC-kill/non-kill objectives, though these can only be fulfilled while flagged. This will encourage participation to get things started even if enemy players are not currently contesting an area.
Ideas for zone objectives:
  • 10-24
  • Barrens watch towers, Bael’modan, and other strategic positions are capturable by both factions like EPL towers, players must be flagged to change control or benefit.
  • Catchup mechanic: alliance outriders from northwatch & thork’s squad from xroads can be triggered to help secure bases
  • Ashenvale - the warsong & silverwing want kills by flagged players against opposing NPCs and enemy players in the lumber camp, kargathia keep, silverwing outpost area of eastern ashenvale
  • Catchup mechanic: silverwing sentinels / warsong grunts spawn and assault silverwing outpost / kargathia keep
  • Duskwood - horde forsaken sending undead horrors (like stitches) to assault Darkshire occasionally from the tower by deadwind pass, flagged players support abomination building with player/undead npc ‘parts.’ Alliance defend against the undead horrors and enemy scavengers with the nightwatch.
  • Catchup mechanic: Forsaken stitches gets more abomination backup, more nightwatch spawn to fight stitches
  • Wetlands - Dwarven caravans attempt to travel from Menethil Harbor to Dun Algaz and back. Flagged Alliance players receive rewards for how many wagons survive the trip; flagged Horde players receive rewards for destroying them.
  • Catchup mechanic: more caravan guards, or Dragonmaw/Dark Iron ambushes occasionally attack and weaken the defenses
  • Stonetalon - plant horde/alliance banners at the tallest points
  • 25-39
  • Thousand needles - The raceway needs more parts; players can ‘pick up’ rocket parts and drop them when killed by another player runescape style; turn into the team you want to have an edge (gnomes vs goblins). Get a bonus if the team you’re rooting for wins the race split among other players in the zone rooting for same team
  • Catchup mechanic: roving gnome/goblin killcars for losing side
  • Desolace - turn in kills on opposite-centaur tribe centaurs & player supporters to that tribe, can blow warhorn in enemy camp if you’ve killed enough players for a bonus
  • Catchup mechanic: centaur invasions from their camp to opposite camp
  • Make hillsbrad toxic again (jk) - hillsbrad fields, azurelode mine, dun garok, eastpoint, southpoint, durnholde captureable
  • Catchup mechanic: hillsbrad/tarren mill squads spawn to go help capture
  • Dustwallow - Bonus rewards for player and faction NPC kills, but both sides competing to cover up evidence of player kills, you can’t hide kills made by your own faction.
  • Catchup mechanic: elite detective & posse patrol road for losing side who are defensive only like goblin city guards
  • STV player bounties; ‘wanted’ players who have killed the most in the zone give bonus honor, bonus honor for kills if you are a wanted player. NPC targets spawn walking on road that flagged players can kill to become wanted.
  • Catchup mechanic: faction with fewer current wanted players spawns some horde/alliance friendly bounty hunters out in the jungle
  • Arathi capture sectors of stromgarde (stromgarde, ogre/troll, syndicate)
  • Catchup mechanic: forsaken or stromgarde spawn from camp outside stromgarde to move to enemy capture points
  • 40+
  • Feralas - zone control capture points in elf ruins in the zone
  • Tanaris - occasional goblin missions pop up across zone for wanted NPCs, players compete with opp faction to score them first; ffa duels in arena there.
  • Azshara - orcs vs high elves; make the azshara crater a ffa pvp zone or overworld bg like wintergrasp
  • Hinterlands - kill opp faction near aerie peak / revantusk village, add more wildhammer/revantusk NPCs outside bases to get it started
  • Blackrock mountain captureable objectives (center island, south gate, north gate, mc entrance)
  • Catchup mechanic: invasion forces from kargath / morgan’s vigil
  • Blasted lands - nethergarde mine captureable
  • Catchup mechanic: invasion forces from stonard / nethergarde keep
tl;dr: <Blacktooth Grin> has melded RP and WPVP for a long time and would love to see opt-in WPVP included in Turtle. We think conflict is in the DNA of WoW's lore and WPVP helps make the world feel alive, which seems to us to directly match the living world goals Turtle promotes. Zug!
