Expand the ignore list

Post by Zoldorf » Wed Oct 30, 2024 1:51 pm

I understand that I can get a blacklist addon, and have in fact done this after running into the limit, but it just feels like this is not something that should need to be done. The default ignore list only gives you a single page limit, meanwhile there seems to be no effort to remove the people spewing racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, really the full spectrum of hate in world chat.

Really my suggestion is "please just remove people who see no problem with spewing hatred into the global chat that anyone getting into Turtle WoW for the first time is forcibly exposed to" but I think expanding the ignore list is more realistic.

Report those people, send in a chatlog, they'll lose access to world chat soon enough.

Me, I just filter World Chat so only LFT, LFG, WTS & WTB get through.

Sometimes GM think it's okay to tell sexists jokes on a world chat. Why ? Because they don't consider that it's sexist at all and hey "it's just a joke". They probably follow a strict set of rules but are unable to actually tell why something is sexist and why something isn't based on materialist facts. Also most of the harm comes from innuendo, intended or not, which can't lead to sanctions without opening a whole new set of problems.

The OP is not talking about innuendo. There's no goal here to eliminate sexism from the world.

I am talking of innuendo. What's your point ?
You say that reporting behaviors will filter world chat from hatred, I say it's not gonna happen by taking a example.
Also I agree, there's no way here to eliminate hatred from the world of warcraft.

So OP is right, please extend the ignore list.

It's common enough that this would be an incredible pain. Not to mention I see GMs posting in the channel when it's happening, which will quiet things down for a few minutes before the same stuff starts right back up. It doesn't really feel like they care about removing those people.

No one's talking about ending prejudice. If GMs aren't going to moderate the chat enough then people need better tools to curate it themselves.

There was a derail attempt about innuendo. I pointed out that wasn't the topic. So we agree.

I'm not saying the status quo is good for sure. I just gave up on any hope of world being acceptable really fast, and got read of all non-functional chatter.

I completely share your frustration! It’s disheartening to see hate speech tolerated in global chat, especially for new players just trying to enjoy the game. While a blacklist addon helps, it shouldn’t be necessary. Expanding the ignore list would be a more effective solution to create a welcoming environment for everyone.

Never have I, in my entire time in WoW between 2006/2007-2024/2025, ever used the Ignore function in the game. I don't know what are people doing differently that requires them to block others.

If your problem is people in world chat talking crap, then leave world chat. It's like going to a social gathering where you don't like the people or what they're saying - the rational solution would be to stop attending further social gatherings with those people, you don't go to the police station demanding said people be put in jail/arrested so you can have a good time, that's absolutely ridiculous. You just leave.

I understand your frustration, I also don't like when in world chat they talk crap, I usually ignore it/don't pay attention to it, but asking for it to be removed is hypocrisy and arrogant. If this is a democracy, then everyone has the right to talk whatever crap they want and subsequently have the right to make as much of a fools as they want, it's their given right to be stupid. Otherwise you can't call it democracy, but rather fascism or dictatorship.

I don't know exactly what specific crap that people say upset you, but acting like it must be stopped at all costs just because you can't take your eyes and mind off of it is immature and infantile. Just keep using your blocklist addon and that's it. Otherwise, you can host your own WoW private server, be a GM and enforce whatever rules you want.

Make sure, I'm not defending those people, it's their own responsibility to choose what they say and don't and if they talk crap on the internet, they are 100% guaranteed spineless cowards who are afraid to say the same things in real life because of the consequences they may face, based on what they're saying. And this is why I don't care what they say and don't get wound up about it, but if you are, then it means the problem is within you. I could be wrong, but you could be suffering from the "terminally online" disease where people give the internet so much of a pedestal that they start caring what happens there more than what happens in real life as real life passes them by. Remember, it's just a video game that literally doesn't do anything positive for you than to take away from your attention which can be used for more productive things, like working out, learning a useful life skill or reading a good book or socializing with people you like in real life, so the fact that you give this insignificant issue so much attention, there is clearly something on your side and if you ignore it, you will suffer more in the end, as for those cowardly weaklings who talk crap, they may get banned/muted, they will create new accounts and continue talking crap.

You can't go and clean up the world before you clean up your own room first.

Terrible argument. What you're saying is that everything should be allowed or nothing should be allowed. I forget the name of the logical fallacy but it is one for sure. A society cannot exist without rules. Hate speech is specifically against the rules of turtle wow. It's not infantile to expect rules to be obeyed/enforced. To piggy back on your cleaning your room analogy, sometimes children need to be told to clean their room. If they choose not to, there should be consequences.

In your previous reply to someone else with you saying "so you support hate speech?", you do the same thing as you are doing now - you are twisting our words to fit your narrative. That guy never said he supports hate speech. Neither did I say "ban everything or allow everything", that's your words, not mine.

How is any online game different than real life interactions? You always have rule followers and rule breakers. In some cases rule followers have no problems and rule breakers get punished, in others rule followers get punished and rule breakers go unpunished.

Your concept that an online game is somehow different than real life is your problem here. You have this distorted perspective that just because it's a game, it can somehow be controlled and policed more effectively than a real life scenario. It can't. Take a game like Valorant, that for a long time touted its kernel-level anticheat as "one of the most effective anticheats around, how cheaters will not be able to get around it", the reality is cheaters still get around it and Riot have to continuously work to prevent them, but it's eventually an endless game of cat and mouse. Neither side will fully prevail. The scenario is the same here. I believe there are GMs/moderators who pay attention to the world chat and occasionally ban offenders, but it's impossible to fully prevent them. Even if they make specific words appear as censored or result in an automatic mute/ban for the user, they will still get around it.

I used to play an old Korean FPS game called Alliance of Valiant Arms, the word "f*ck" was one of the words that if you write properly, it doesn't appear, for example "f*ck you cheater" would appear as "you cheater". So what did me and other people did instead? We started saying "fk you cheater" instead. People still find ways to go around rules and restrictions. You also can't sit them down and educate them what is proper or improper behavior towards others on the internet. If they don't have their own responsibility to act respectfully, that's entirely their problem, because it probably means they have some underlying issues and they use the anonymity of hiding behind a character on a private server on an MMORPG to say what they are afraid to say in real life, as I mentioned in my earlier post.

Then again, we don't know what said people have said that made the OP go into a rage. Someone might've said "there are only two genders" and then the OP goes into mental breakdown. It's everyone's right to express their opinion, regardless of what it is.
In The Friends of Voltaire, Hall wrote: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" as an illustration of Voltaire's beliefs. This quotation – which is sometimes misattributed to Voltaire himself – is often cited to describe the principle of freedom of speech.
What annoys me is that some people have this irrational sense of entitlement and they go on the internet and start demanding everything to start catering to their needs otherwise they will throw their toys in a fit. This is a free private server, nobody is required to pay in order to play on it, so if you look at 80% of the stupid requests on these forums, they are inadequate and out of touch, people just assume if they want something, they have to get it regardless, sure, you can post about it, but don't expect for it to be implemented or that other people won't disagree with you.

The OP needs to realize there are some things in life you can't really control and asking for them to be controlled, just because they think so is not a belief at all grounded in reality. The only thing he can do is ignore them or use his addon for ignoring and move on or if it bothers him so much, just leave world chat of that's not an option, find another server.

Another example - I paid for ESO in 2015 and I really enjoyed the game, then in 2016 they release and update that makes overland content so easy that you aggro 10 mobs and you just sit and don't die, you can go to the toilet and come back and still won't be dead. So as a paying customer, me and others voiced our complaints how the game has been made too easy to the point where it's so boring it's pointless to even play it. Do you know what happened? The people who liked the new god mode, started attacking and mocking us, giving us "solutions" like "just play naked" or "just run Trials (which is the equivalent of Raids in WoW)". I don't want to play naked, I want to use the gear in the game the same way like in Vanilla WoW where as a low level you loot a green item and you are excited about it, because it makes you a little bit stronger and I don't want to run Trials, I want to enjoy the questing. What am I going to do? Go through the tedious leveling for weeks/months just so I can do Trials I never really cared about? And if you tried to defend yourself, the mods from ZOS (Zenimax) would warn/mute/soft ban you because "you were acting out of line and were "flaming" others" or ridiculous reasons like that. Lots of veteran players quit because of this, and mostly because we felt unwelcome in the game and community since we can't even voice our concerns without other users attacking and mocking us and the developers standing behind them protecting them only because they agree with them. I don't play ESO anymore.

Same happened in LOTRO where I bought all expansions and spent a lot of money, they made similar changes, you complain, the white knights mock you and attack you, you try to defend yourself and your opinion, the developers ban/mute you. I also don't play LOTRO anymore because of that.

Same with some very niche B2P MMORPG on Steam called Project Gorgon - I kept asking for them to add some feature to the UI where it can remember window size/position between reinstalls, because all windows at first are small and you have to resize them manually. I asked about 3-4 times over the course of 2 years, after the last time - "permanently banned from Steam forums due to the suspicion of being an alt for another banned player". That was their stupid reason for banning me, never argued with anyone in the game, never insulted anyone, mostly kept to myself for some 60-70 hours over 2 years and then I get banned. I still don't know if they banned me from the game itself, but I have no desire to play such a game if such childish people are the developers.

What I wanted to say with this is that these are the moments in life - you pay for something and you get treated like trash instead, meaning if you pay for PREMIUM, you are still just a disposable wallet for them. So I wouldn't waste my time on this earth going on pointless online crusades about some B2P MMORPGs where I've been wronged, I just let them go and move on with my life. Right now Turtle WoW is the only MMORPG I can enjoy, because it's based on my favorite version of the game, plus changes and there is much more to come, so I'm glad it exists and that it's even free. I don't really see the problems that the OP has, I have joined world chat and I barely pay attention to it, only very rarely strike a short conversation with some random person over some topic that interests me and I move on.

The problem with the OP is he is most likely terminally online, lives in the game, lives on the internet more than in real life and pays attention to this crap more than anyone needs to. It's a personal problem that if he can learn to let go, he will feel better and more free, but I still stand by my opinion - if he demands some special measures be taken against people, then he is very detached from reality.

Just because you literally don't say an exact phrase doesn't mean there isn't that idea behind it. That is your argument, plain and simple. If we don't allow everything, its a "fascism or a dictatorship". That was your argument. And if you're not against hate speech, you are indeed pro hate speech.

It's very hard to say what qualifies as "hate speech". The OP should post some evidence of what upsets him and obscure the names of the "offenders" so we can see what he considers hate speech. So far we don't have any evidence provided by the OP, we can only take his word that it happened and that's it.

Or, you can go ahead and do the same, log into the game, and take some screenshots from world chat to show me what "hate speech" really is.

As I've been there and have seen people talking some nasty crap, I haven't seen anything really outrageous, or maybe I'm just not paying attention to is, so you or the OP can give us a refresher. After all, this thread is about punishing offenders who break the rules, it will be good for everyone, especially the moderators who view the thread to see some of the nasty things people have said.

Otherwise, the post is just a rant without substance. For example, I didn't log in for several weeks around October-November, I log in on one of my characters and notice my gold is missing, so I remember they were telling people to change their passwords and I figured someone broke into my account and stole my gold, so I made a ticket and said basically "I had this much gold before, now it's gone, can you do something about it?" And after about a week my gold was back, because I said roughly how much gold I had, it wasn't much, about 150g, and the developers can check the database and see if I'm lying or not and when they see I'm not and that there were logins from different IPs and the gold was moved to another account, they return the gold to me. Very simple, because I provided whatever evidence I could.
