I don't think we need portals to the starting areas. Yesterday I rode all the way from Orgrimmar to Thunder Bluff with my turtle mount and collected all flight points on the way. I even had some small RP encounters. The journey is the destination.

I think the 0.5 rate is great. Due to the quest xp leveling doesn't really feel that much slower compared to a 1.0 rate.
